The Haunting of Hill House is a 1959 gothic horror novel by American author Shirley Jackson. It was a finalist for the National Book Award and has been made into two feature films and a play, and is the basis of a Netflix series. Oddly the success of American Horror Story as the quintessential example of anthological horror also seemed to be its downfall, as it fell into a trap of its own making, possibly trying too hard to be cutting-edge and quirky, but forgetting to tell decent stories at the same time. Originally the show would air on UK TV on Channel 4, before achieving worldwide recognition when Netflix would step in and take control of the property. Admittedly the show would often vary in quality, with many saying that the lower-budget early episodes were more convincing than slicker newer episodes, but throughout its staggered run there have been some truly shocking, thrilling, and terrifying stories.

Eleanor tends to experience phenomena to which the others are oblivious. At the same time, Eleanor may be losing touch with reality, and it is implied that at least some of what Eleanor witnesses may be products of her imagination. Another implied possibility is that Eleanor possesses a subconscious telekinetic ability that is itself the cause of many of the disturbances experienced by her and the others, which might indicate there is no ghost in the house at all. This possibility is suggested especially by references early in the novel to Eleanor's childhood memories about episodes of a poltergeist-like entity that seemed to target her home. Flashing between past and present, a fractured family confronts haunting memories of their old home and the terrifying events that drove them from it. Markway becomes alarmed at Eleanor's obsession with Hill House in spite of its dangers.

Later, Eleanor's mental instability worsens as she enters the library and climbs the dilapidated spiral staircase, followed by Markway, who tries to coax her down. That being said, The Haunting of Hill House unfolds at too plodding a pace and suffers from that persistent Netflix affliction of excessive running times. Nearly every episode clocks in around an hour, when 45 minutes could have gotten the job done. All four of the inhabitants begin to experience strange events while in the house, including unseen noises and ghosts roaming the halls at night, strange writing on the walls, and other unexplained events.

Barring possible disappointment at the feelings-over-fear resolution, though, audiences are likely to go nuts for this edge-of-your-couch nightmare, and Netflix has questionably turned limited series into ongoing dramas before.

A remake of the film was attempted in the early 1990s by horror author Stephen King. To enhance the actors' performances during scenes in which they react to off-stage voices or sounds, Wise and his sound editors created a "pre-scored" soundtrack of voices and noises. Mike Flanagan's thought-provoking mini-series uses technical skill, theological provocation and great characters to create perfect, slow-burn horror. There are some serious horror chops on display here – yes, it’s bloody scary – but it’s the series’ profoundly moving rumination on its domestic tragedies that lingers long after that glass of wine has been shocked from your hand. Director Mike Flanagan takes Shirley Jackson's iconic haunted house novel and works into something wholly different, yet equally effective.
It means that certain characters and actors virtually disappear for long stretches of time and certain relationships don’t always build as clearly as they should, but it also means each actor gets a showcase episode or two. More important, it allows the show to examine varied experiences of childhood tragedy. Were it not also a haunted house story, it could just be an absorbing drama about the intersection of family trauma, individual responsibility, mental illness, addiction and real estate, like the unholy union of This Is Us, Intervention and Flip or Flop. It all builds nicely to Flanagan’s aesthetic tour de force in a sixth episode that functions as a variation on a bottle episode, largely set in Shirley’s funeral home and filmed primarily in lengthy tracking shots that make astounding use of production designer Patricio M. Farrell’s sets.
